Bye Bye Bunions

Now for the slightly taboo topic of bunions. I’ve had a tonne of clients suffering with them, but for you lucky readers that haven’t yet been graced with the presence of a bunion, your questions are about to be answered…   What are bunions?   Bunions are the cause of a misalignment in the foot joints. The big toe is forced to drift significantly in the direction of the other toes, thus resulting in a bony lump forming on the side of the big toe. Ouch.   Who are victims of the bunion?   Anyone! More than 15% of people in the UK are victims of the blasted bunion and the majority are women. Even the Domestic Goddess Nigella Lawson was a sufferer!   Why do we get them?   Badly fitting/ narrow shoes. Our judgement of practicality is clouded in the presence of those perfect heels. So BE STRONG and opt for sensible shoes that fit properly to avoid bunions.   Bunions can even be the cause of arthitis, so its definitely worth investigating what will help.   Unfortunately bunions can be inherited *sigh* but the pain can be relieved, just keep on reading!     But how are they treated?   If bunions are ignored they get worse, so there are a few options to relieve the pain.   Appropriate shoes relieve the pressure that you get when squeezing your feet into narrow spaces that commonly cause inflammation of the bunion by switching up your footwear. The book I recommend most to clients…

    I have a lot of clients who are self-employed or who are leaving a corporate environment to pursue a more creative career. It’s a great joy for me to help them marry up their personal style with the brand they are creating. I became aware of Personal Branding a few years ago and then read Jennifer Holloway’s awesome book “Personal Branding for Brits” which offers a practical guide to creating and promoting your personal brand. In the book Jennifer lists, amongst other things, elements which give clues to you and your brand:   Email signature Blog Twitter profile Your voicemail Your accent Body Language State of your clothes and shoes   And it is the last bit is where I come in. Helping people develop their style along side their business brand means getting to the bottom of how my clients want to be perceived and what they want their clothes and style of dress to say. During a recent Skype appointment with a client she showed me some of her shoes. One pair was a green velvet pair with a square toe. I asked “are they from the early 2000’s?” The client replied “yes! How did you know that?” That style of shoe was really popular around the time Trinny & Susannah came to the throne of fashion, along with lace trim twinsets and A-line skirts. Has your Mum’s style influenced yours?

  Without a shadow of a doubt yes. As my mum’s style has grown more confidant (you’ll easily find her in Zara, LK Bennett and Hobbs) mine has too. My mum’s mum, my Nana, had legendary style: she never wore black, owned fur coats and had a scarf selection to die for. I inherited her furs, her scarves and to some extent, her passion for clothes. My Nana looked, and my Mum always looks, so ‘done’, so well put together, Even when my mum is hanging out with her 3 grandchildren, playing with them and taking them to the park, she will have a regal air to her (maybe due to the 3 purple coats she owns…!)   I think sometimes we forget, or don’t fully value, the impact our clothes has on others, or what examples we are setting for the next generation – how ‘outstanding’ we are in our clothes makes us more or less memorable.   Saying that, I’ve been dissed by my three year old nephew for wearing a sleeveless waistcoat he didn’t like! My monthly column in Sew Now Magazine

  When I first started out as The Wardrobe Angel I did my fair share of writing to get experience (read: for free!) I wrote for The Halifax Courier, I did guest blog posts, got my own blog up and running (click here for a read!) and I researched a weekly column for the now defunct Egg Mag about sustainability issues in the north of England. All those experiences gave me valuable experiences: meeting deadlines, planning and pitching ideas, keeping to a word count, sourcing and attributing images, understanding the editing process. After each column or blog was turned in I would always wait with excitement to see my work turn up online and in print. It was such a buzz! Now I have a print column AND get paid for it – a dream come true! I write a monthly column for the brand spanking new Sew Now magazine translating trends into sewing patterns combined with styling tips to help readers get more wear out of their wardrobes and sewn creations.     The column has schooled me in sewing patterns, acquainting me with new websites, and brought new businesses and brands to my attention. I think this is so important when you are self-employed and running your own business that you are constantly pushing yourself to learn new things. Tina Fey puts this really well (below). What is a Wardrobe Angel moodboard?

    A moodboard is a collection of ideas – in this case visual ideas – which will give my client inspiration, advice and styling tips long after I have left her wardrobe. Creating them is honestly one of the most exciting parts of my job and I love nothing more than sitting down with glue, scissors and a stack of magazines ready to create her a work of moodboard art.   How do I begin a moodboard?   During a client appointment  I make loads of notes: blogs, books, websites, labels that I think the client will like. I also make a list of styling ideas to show the client – how to layer, how to combine textures, how to match colours. All these then make it on to the moodboard. I also take into account the objectives the client and I set for their appointment. The moodboard (above) was for a client who needed help putting together a work capsule wardrobe that took into account Dress Down Friday.   How long does a moodboard take?   I can spend a lot of time prepping the moodboard by pulling pages out of fashion magazines and compiling all the images I need. I also have 2 huge folders here in my office at Wardrobe Towers which are chock-full of articles and styling ideas. I’ll raid these folders and do lots of photocopying. A moodboard is A3 size and I fill both sides with inspiration.
