A Dress Done Well

A Dress Done Well

Where can I find a decent dress with sleeves?   I get asked that a lot. Whether it’s workwear, daywear or eventwear my clients always want options with sleeves. And rightly so – sometimes a jacket is too much and only a dress will do. I’ve found some fab brands that accommodate this wardrobe desire over the years and recently came across Cecily – a brand which understands dressing the feminine side of our personalities without compromising on power. Cecily dresses have fantastic structure, a great choice of colours and have been seen on quite a few famous faces, Holly Willoughby to name but one. This famous following hasn’t affected the pricing – for the seriously awesome design elements like bell sleeves, statement bows at the neckline, and collars to make Peter Pan jealous the prices are on a par with LK Bennett and Hobbs for womenswear. The thing I love about dresses is that you don’t have to think of the coordinating pieces – there’s no matching the jacket to the blouse to the trouser – a dress does, and says, it all. That’s what the designers at Cecily have captured so well – designing a standout dress which does all the talking, so all that you need to think about is the bag and the shoes. That’s a wardrobe WIN as far as I am concerned.   Here we have the DIVINE Josephine dress from Cecily. Look at that neck detailing…just awesome. The triumph of the LBD

We had 3 city breaks (Portland, San Fran and Boston), drove down the West Coast and hiked in Big Sur, and we also took the Amtrak cross country. Weather wise we packed for spring showers, hot summer sun and freezing wintery conditions – all in 1 big rucksack! Amongst other items, I took an oversized jersey LBD from Zara with a sequinned crossed back and a cotton summer shift LBD from Gap. The jersey LBD proved to be a god send – I wore it on the cross country train where we did a lot of sitting down and looking out at the amazing scenery and again in Portland where it was hot hot hot when we arrived. Teamed with my black suede ankle boots it was a fab day-to-night dress which worked perfectly with Portland’s laid back vibe. The Gap dress came in handy when we reached Big Sur. We spent our first day sitting out on the deck of our romantic retreat in the hot sunshine and dressed in black with bare feet and a ginger beer in hand I felt utterly relaxed yet elegant; I wasn’t about to let a rucksack holiday change my enjoyment of clothes (even if I went 3 weeks without heels! And those that know me, know how I love a heel!) Sometimes it’s re-imagining a classic which gives our wardrobe a breath of fresh air: the LBD...
